The Bag System - What it is and How it
works.

The Root Control Bag is non woven fabric bag that root prunes a plantšs root structure and makes harvesting quick and easy.

The fabric bag is made of non woven polypropylene prepared especially for Root Control, Inc. by Amoco Fabrics and Fibers Company. AmocoŒs a world leader in geotextile fabric manufacturing.

The first bags were planted in 1980 and harvested in 1982. Since incorporating in 1984, Root Control, Inc. has sold millions of bags worldwide. Today, a large number of great nurserymen use the bag system to their advantage. The best way to understand is to visit a nursery that has used the system for years and to buy some bag grown trees. How does the Root Control bag work?

Trees or shrubs are planted into the Root Control bag. As the roots of the plant grow, they hit the fuzzy inside fabric of the bag. Importantly, roots do not circle on the fabric as they do against plastic. Instead, the root is caught by the fuzzy inner surface of the material The root penetrates the fabric. The tough fabric, however, presents the root from expanding. The root is choked by the labric, the root tip looses its apical dominance and lateral root branching, or pruning, occurs inside the bag.

Root pruning is important to the health of a transplanted plant. A high quality plant saves you money. With the Root Control bag, approximately 80% of the root structure is harvested with the plant. By contrast, a recent study at Michigan State University showed that up to 98% of a treešs root structure can be cut away with normal digging procedures.

Water and nutrient absorption occurs normally both inside and outside the bag at the root tips. Water and nutrients are transferred up through the center of the root, the xylem. Remember, the fabric bag is porous. Moisture and nutrients pass freely into and out of the bag.

Carbohydrates manufactured in the leaves travel down the outer cambium layer of the plant, the phloem. This carbohydrate flow is stopped or greatly restricted by the fabric. A build up of carbohydrates ensues within the root system inside the bag. Many roots will swell on the inside and outside of the bag and a natural callusing occurs at the bag surface. Root primordia form with the callous, assuring rapid root regeneration at transplanting.

When the tree is transplanted, REMOVE THE BAG. Water the plant. Because of the fibrous feeder root development, the carbohydrate build up, and the root callousing, new root regeneration is almost immediate. Expect a greatly expanded harvesting season, superior transplanting success and top growth the season following transplanting.

The bottom of the Root Control Bag is polyethylene. The bottom of the tough bottom style bag is polyethylene laminated onto polypropylenc fabric. The polyethylene plastic bottom assures that all root growth is lateral through the fabric. All roots hitting the plastic bottom are diverted into the fabric side. Easy digging is then assured. Because the plastic bottom forms no attachment to the roots. bag removal is easy.
Plastic Bottom vs. Tough Bottom

Root Control, Inc. offers two styles of tree bags, regular plastic bottom and tough bottom. Both have a plastic bottom that redirects all root growth laterally. Harvesting is therefore easy. The bottom of the tough bottom bag is plastic laminated onto fabric. The bag is made to hold up well when the tree is handled and shipped right in the bag. The regular plastic bottom bag is not made to hold up as well in shipping. The regular plastic bottom bag is widely ;used by customers who grow in the bag, then remove the fabric and place the plant into a pot or box, or wrap the ball in burlap for shipping.

The bottom of the Root Control Bag is applied by a hot melt glue process. The glue process leaves no sewn seam through which a root can escape. The superior Amoco fabric, the glue process and the years of testing make the Root Control Bag the best growing system available.
